How to Spot a Mama’s Boy Early

Published

on

Spotting a mama’s boy early can save you months of confusion. In the beginning, it often looks harmless. He’s sweet, attentive and family oriented. But there’s a difference between a man who loves his mother and a man who blindly follows her instructions. The signs are always there, even before the relationship becomes serious. Here are some hints on how to spot a mama’s boy early. .

How He Handles Boundaries

A man who follows his mother’s directive without asking questions can’t have healthy lines. When she calls at odd hours, he immediately drops everything to answer her even when he needs to spend time with his partner. Anytime she comments on your relationship, he always agrees with her suggestions. A friend once dated someone whose mother would visit without warning. Instead of asking her to call ahead, he waves it off as something normal. When a man avoids creating space, these are one of the subtle habits that destroy a relationship.

His Mother Has a Say in Your Relationship

If every disagreement somehow reaches his mother, take that seriously. In a past relationship, any small misunderstanding between us would make its way to her desk by evening. She would then subtly influence his decisions, and I could always tell when her advice shaped his reaction. A healthy relationship needs privacy. If his mother becomes the third voice in your conversations, you’re no longer dealing with a partnership but a triangle.

He Expects You to Fit Into His Childhood Routine

Some men want their partners to mirror the comfort they get from their mothers. This shows up in small but consistent ways. He wants his meals to be prepared by his mom. Sometimes, he prefers household routines to match hers. I remember suggesting a different way to prepare something simple, and he immediately shut it down because “that’s not how my mom does it.” That statement shows he is still emotionally tied to his mother.

He Considers Her Approval Over Your Partnership

Any man that consistently asks his mother’s opinion before taking any decision that affects both of you is guilty. It starts with harmless choices, but it eventually affects the relationship.I once saw how quickly a friend’s attitude changed after talking to his mother whenever we disagreed. It became obvious that her approval weighed more than our conversations. When that happens, you never sit in the driver’s seat of the relationship.

He Can’t Make Independent Choices

A Mama’s boy can’t seem to make up his mind on anything. He is always looking for cues or needs reassurance before doing the ordinary. Such a man always depends on his mother for emotional validation, which makes it difficult for his partner to reason with him. There was a situation where a man couldn’t pick something as simple as a restaurant without checking with his mom.

Spotting these signs early doesn’t mean writing someone off immediately. It just means seeing the dynamic for what it is. A man can love his mother deeply and still function independently. But if he hasn’t learned that balance, the relationship often becomes an emotional tug of war you didn’t sign up for.

5 Things You Should Know About Tolyamory

Published

on

Relationship language keeps changing as people find new ways to describe how couples deal with love and commitment. One of the newer terms is tolyamory, which describes a situation that can look similar to polyamory but works differently.

Tolyamory Means Tolerating a Partner’s Outside Relationships

Tolyamory combines the words “tolerate” and “polyamory.” This is a term used in which a partner knows that his lover is cheating but tolerates it.

It does not mean the person approves the arrangement. They just continue in the relationship for reasons known to them.

It Differs From Polyamory

Tolyamory is not non-monogamy or polyamory. In polyamorous relationships, the people involved openly discuss their relationship desires. They agree to having multiple romantic relationships.

Tolyamory, on the other hand, is silence and unwillingness to confront a cheating partner. This difference in these concepts are consent and communication.

Dan Savage Coined the Term

Sex and relationship columnist and podcaster Dan Savage is credited with coming up with the term. He introduced it on his Savage Lovecast podcast in 2024 while discussing people who tolerate their partners having sexual encounters outside their relationships.

There is a debate about if tolyamory is a genuine relationship or just a new name for accepted cheating.

People Stay for Different Reasons

Someone might tolerate a partner’s infidelity because they want to protect their family or for financial security. There is also the social and cultural angle to accepting cheating without complaints.

For some couples, staying together despite an affair is easier than dealing with the consequences of separation. However, tolerating something does not mean the other person is comfortable with it.

Lack of Communication Can Create Problems

One of the concerns around tolyamory is the absence of clear communication. If one partner is unhappy but stays silent, emotional distress grows.

While there is no perfect way to measure healthy relationships,  boundaries should be respected.

If one person wants monogamy while the other wants multiple partners, an honest conversation should take place.

Tolyamory is a situation in which one partner tolerates behaviour they don’t want. Understanding the term can help people distinguish between consensual non-monogamy, cheating and simply staying silent about a problem.

Sex may end with an orgasm, but research suggests that it offers more. There is evidence that shows that cuddling helps your relationship. Talking, holding hands or kissing can help tighten the bond. Here are some findings that show the benefits from staying close to your partner after sex.

Sexual Satisfaction

A 2014 study published in Archives of Sexual Behavior examined 335 people in romantic relationships. It found that spending time showing affection after sex was associated with greater sexual satisfaction. That higher sexual satisfaction was, the greater relationship satisfaction.

The researchers then followed 101 established couples through daily reports and a three-month follow-up. They found that couples who experienced longer and more satisfying periods of affection after sex also reported higher sexual and relationship satisfaction later.

Emotional Intimacy

Cuddling after intercourse allows time for lovers to remain close. That closeness creates a sense of emotional connection when couples hold each other.

Research involving 1,493 Americans found a connection between cuddling and emotional intimacy. 70% of respondents reported cuddling during their most recent sexual event, and cuddling was the only one of the behaviours studied that was associated with emotional intimacy.

In a study involving 106 couples with children, affection explains the link between sexual activity and increased positive feelings. They also found that the strength of this daily connection allows both partners’ enjoy their relationship.

Couples can benefit from the affectionate moments surrounding sex. Kissing and caressing can give partners another opportunity to bond together.

A separate study of midlife couples found that frequent kissing and caressing were associated with sexual satisfaction and relationship happiness. The study also found that a partner’s behaviour mattered when predicting an individual’s satisfaction.

Gives Couples Time to Connect

The minutes immediately after sex can be useful for simple forms of connection. A couple may talk about their day, laugh together and lie quietly in each other’s arms.

That does not mean every couple should follow the same routine. The research shows a relationship between post-sex affection and relationship. Although it does not state that only cuddling promotes a better relationship.

Overall, science suggests that what couples do after sex can matter. Cuddling may help extend feelings of closeness, support sexual satisfaction and keep a relationship strong.

Should Couples Have Joint or Separate Finances?

Published

on

Photo: Istock

Money is one of the biggest issues couples deal with, and how partners manage it affects the stability of a relationship. Some prefer joint finances because they see their income as shared, while others keep their money separate to maintain financial independence.

Joint finances allows couples to manage their household without problems. When partners contribute to one account, payments are easy to disburse and trace.

For example, a couple may decide that both salaries go into a joint account. The money is then used to pay rent, and other bills.

Joint finances also encourage teamwork. When partners share their money, they may feel more responsible for reaching common goals.

However, joint accounts can create problems when partners’ spending habits differ. One person may be a careful saver while the other enjoys spending money. If they do not agree on how much they can spend, arguments occur.

There is also the issue of financial abuse. A partner who earns more could use money to control the other person and  make them feel dependent. Joint finances work when both partners have a clear understanding of how money will be used.

Keeping finances separate can work for couples with different financial priorities. For example, one partner might want to spend more on hobbies while the other prefers savings. Separate accounts allow both people to manage their personal spending without problems.

Separate finances can also protect individual financial security. If a relationship ends, having clearly separated accounts may make it easier to identify who owns what. Although there might be legal considerations depending on where you reside.

The disadvantage is that separate finances can create a feeling of separation within the relationship. If partners become too protective of their money, they may start thinking in terms of “my money” and “your money”

It can also become complicated when one partner earns much more than the other. A strict 50/50 system to rent, bills and other expenses may be unfair if their incomes are not the same.

A combination of joint and separate finances may be better. Couples can maintain a joint account for shared expenses and goals while keeping individual accounts for personal spending.

For example, partners could contribute an agreed percentage of their income to a single account. This will be used for rent, bills, groceries, and  family expenses. The remaining funds stay in their personal accounts.

This promotes teamwork without removing financial independence. It encourages couples to understand each other’s financial habits.

There is no perfect option  for every couple. What is important is that couples should be honest and transparent with one another. A financial system should help partners work together.
