Nadia Nakai has been nominated for Best Celebrity Personality at this year’s National Film and TV Awards South Africa, which will be held later this month at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria. The category recognises public figures who maintain relevance across television, music, digital platforms and business, and Nakai’s work over the past few years places her clearly in that group.

While many first came to know her through her music career, Nakai has continued to expand her reach. Her appearance on the Netflix reality series Young, Famous & African introduced her to a wider continental audience, and her collaborations in beauty and branding have kept her active beyond the recording studio. It is this multi-platform presence that the nomination acknowledges.

She is nominated alongside Ayanda Thabethe, Khanyi Mbau, Lasizwe and Minnie Dlamini. These personalities are also visible across several areas of entertainment and media. The grouping reflects where the industry currently is. Careers are no longer defined by a single role. Visibility and influence often come from being able to work across different types of platforms and audiences.

Over the past year, Nakai’s public profile has shifted. Her social media presence has been more measured, with fewer posts but clearer purpose in when and how she appears. This has not reduced her recognition. Instead, it has kept focus on her work rather than ongoing commentary.

Public voting will determine the final winner, and support from her audience will be a factor. However, the nomination alone places her among a small group of personalities who continue to resonate in a fast-moving entertainment space.

For Nakai, the moment is less about reinvention and more about continuity. She remains present, working and visible. Not through constant updates, but through consistent output across music, screen and business.

Nonhle Thema has become one of South Africa’s biggest trending topics after claiming she introduced X (formerly Twitter), to the country. The statement was made during an interview on 947 Drive with Thando Thabethe.  Many users are debating whether the claim was accurate or an exaggeration.

Nonhle Thema rose to fame in 2007, emerging as one of South Africa’s leading “It girls” and a prominent television presenter. While she made several statements, her remark about Twitter got more reactions. Many users on X questioned the claim.  Others argued that while she may not have introduced the platform, she was among the first South African celebrities to make Twitter popular.

Mnu Mpofana said

“Maybe one of the first South African celebrities to trend on Twitter but not introduce South Africa to Twitter. I was on Twitter around 2009 & she was trending around the end of 2011 if I’m not mistaken.”

For Ndlombango, she laughed it off saying

She was one of the first Black people to stay in Bryanston, first person to introduce Twitter in SA? Nonhle akame kancane man. Please.”

Several posts compared her influence with that of other South African celebrities who were active on Twitter during its early days.
