Bonang Matheba Didn’t Miss in Beaded Fringe Gown

Bonang Matheba brought a distinctly Nigerian fashion touch to the L’Oréal Paris Ultimate Makeup Masterclass in Johannesburg on 19 September, where she served as MC. Held at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, the event brought together beauty personalities including actress Ama Qamata and international makeup artist Harold James.

For the occasion, Bonang wore a custom gown created by Nigerian fashion brand Emagine by Bukola, from a concept by stylist and designer Makililo Nelson A. The burnt-orange dress was covered in detailed beadwork in red, green, gold and darker tones, with swirling motifs running across the halter-neck bodice. A small cutout sat below the bust, while a pointed orange panel defined the waist.

The skirt was where the design became particularly distinctive. Long orange strands of fringe fell from the waist and continued down the floor-length skirt, mixed with rows of multicoloured beads in earthy shades. Makililo said the design was developed with Bonang’s role as host in mind, with movement considered as part of the concept. His inspiration included African earth tones, traditional handcrafted details and paisley-inspired motifs.

Bonang kept her accessories in the same colour family. She carried a small beaded clutch decorated with orange fringe and floral details, while gold strappy heels were visible beneath the gown. Gold earrings and a slim bracelet added jewellery without introducing another strong colour.

Her hair was pulled into a high ponytail, with the length falling down her back. The makeup featured defined brows, black winged liner, full lashes and a nude lip, keeping the beauty look relatively simple against the detailed gown.

The look also fits Bonang’s established relationship with Nigerian designers. At the 2024 Miss South Africa finale, she wore five looks created by Nigeria-based designers, including Veekee James, SOMO, Sheye Oladejo, Mazelle Bridal and Emagine by Bukola. Her latest Emagine by Bukola gown continues that connection, this time pairing the couture finish she often brings to major hosting appearances with layers of orange fringe and intricate African-inspired beadwork.

Siyanda Banny pairs an oversized white top with light-blue wide-leg jeans, bringing an unusual shape to a familiar denim combination. The look centres on the top’s construction, with its broad neckline and flowing sides contrasting with the relaxed cut of the jeans.

The white top has a wide, folded neckline that stretches across the shoulders, creating a layered effect around the upper body. Its fabric falls in loose panels over the torso, extending outwards at the sides like a cape. Folds around the waist give the piece additional shape, while the plain white fabric keeps the focus on its cut and construction.

Banny wears the top with high-waisted, light-blue jeans in a faded wash. The wide legs fall towards the ground, with visible stitching and a double-button fastening adding detail around the waist. The denim brings a casual element to the outfit, balancing the volume of the top.

Her accessories include black rectangular sunglasses, gold earrings, a chunky watch and bracelets. She carries a structured brown monogram handbag with dark handles and gold-toned hardware. White shoes peek out beneath the long hems of the jeans, keeping the footwear in line with the top.

Her hair is pulled back into a centre-parted style, while her makeup includes defined brows, warm-toned eye makeup and a neutral lip colour. The black sunglasses provide contrast against the white top and complement the darker details of the handbag.

The outfit demonstrates how an unconventional top can change the look of everyday denim. By keeping the jeans, accessories and beauty look relatively simple, Banny allows the white top’s oversized shape and folded neckline to take centre stage.

Mihlali Ndamase wears a grey pinstripe suit with a fitted jacket, matching wide-leg trousers and a crisp white shirt. The combination draws on traditional office dressing, with the cut of the jacket and the length of the trousers giving the outfit its defining features.

Fine white stripes run vertically across the grey fabric. The jacket has structured shoulders, a fitted waist and pointed panels at the front, while the matching trousers fall loosely down her legs. The difference between the fitted upper half and the wider trouser legs gives the suit a distinct shape.

A white shirt and grey tie complete the formal combination. The tie sits beneath the shirt collar, adding to the businesswear styling. The limited colour selection keeps the focus on the pinstripe pattern and the cut of the individual pieces.

Ndamase carries a small silver handbag with a quilted texture and short handles. Its metallic finish contrasts with the grey suit, adding a different texture to the outfit. She also wears a ring, keeping the jewellery simple. Her shoes are largely concealed beneath the long trouser hems, leaving the trousers’ cut clearly visible.

Her beauty look follows the formal styling. Her dark hair is pulled back from her face, while rectangular glasses add another detail to the overall look. Her makeup includes defined brows, softly emphasised eyes and nude-toned lips, keeping the focus on her features without introducing strong additional colours.

Ndamase’s pinstripe suit reflects her interest in structured dressing. Here, the white shirt, tie and matching trousers give the look a more traditional businesswear feel, while the silver handbag adds a personal touch. The outfit demonstrates how she can work with classic tailoring while making considered choices in accessories and styling.
