South African films on Netflix cover everything from revenge thrillers and political dramas to romantic comedies built around family feuds. Recent releases have brought new stories and familiar local talent to the platform, giving viewers several options for their next movie night. Here are South African films to add to your watchlist, including newer releases and earlier titles that remain worth watching.

180

Released on Netflix in April 2026, 180 follows Zak Sigcawu, played by Prince Grootboom, a father who has worked to leave his troubled past behind. He runs a small business and has built a life with his family, but a road-rage incident changes everything when his young son, Mandla, is caught in the crossfire. With his son critically injured and the justice system failing to deliver the outcome he expects, Zak begins to consider a course of action that threatens the life he has built. Directed by Alex Yazbek, the thriller examines what happens when grief and anger push a man towards revenge.

Yoh! Bestie

Released in 2026, Yoh! Bestie follows Thando, played by Katlego Lebogang, whose romantic life has been disappointing. When her best friend returns from his travels with a fiancée, Thando is forced to confront feelings she may not have recognised before. The arrival of his partner changes the dynamic between the friends, bringing jealousy and uncomfortable questions about their relationship to the surface. The romantic comedy also stars Siya Sepotokele and Didie Makobane.

Meet the Khumalos

Starring Khanyi Mbau and Ayanda Borotho, Meet the Khumalos follows two women who were once best friends but have become bitter enemies. Their rivalry escalates when they discover that their children are in love with each other. What begins as a dispute between the mothers develops into a neighbourhood feud, placing the young couple in the middle of a conflict they did not create. Released in 2025, the comedy draws on family loyalties, old grudges and the complications that arise when parents try to control their children’s relationships.

Heart of the Hunter

For viewers who prefer action and political intrigue, Heart of the Hunter follows Zuko Khumalo, a former assassin who becomes caught up in a dangerous conspiracy. His past draws him into a mission involving a prominent political figure, forcing him to confront threats that extend beyond his own safety. The film combines a pursuit-driven plot with questions about political power and the consequences of secrets being exposed. It is a suitable choice for viewers looking for a South African action thriller.

Love and Wine

Love and Wine centres on a wealthy young man who wants to find out whether a woman will love him without knowing about his privileged background. He decides to conceal his wealth and experience life under different circumstances, but maintaining the deception becomes increasingly difficult as their relationship develops. The romantic comedy explores the role money plays in relationships and what happens when a relationship begins with a carefully constructed lie.

Amandla

Amandla follows two brothers whose lives take different directions as they grow older. Their shared childhood does not prevent them from becoming entangled in circumstances that test their loyalty to each other. As crime and difficult personal choices threaten their relationship, the film examines how family ties can be strained by the environments in which people grow up. It offers a more serious crime drama for viewers interested in stories about brotherhood and the consequences of past decisions.

Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight

Set in Zimbabwe in 1980, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight follows an eight-year-old girl growing up on a farm during a period of political upheaval. The story is told through her perspective as her family confronts uncertainty and the consequences of the country’s changing political circumstances. Its setting and subject matter distinguish it from the contemporary relationship and crime stories elsewhere on this list. Although it is not a South African-set story, it may interest viewers looking for films about southern African history and family life.

Netflix’s South African catalogue includes films across several genres, but availability can change by country. Check the platform in your region before watching, particularly if you are accessing Netflix outside South Africa.
