‏Netflix is marking 10 years in South Africa with an expanded slate of local productions, including returning series, film sequels and new titles across drama, comedy, thrillers and unscripted entertainment.

The streaming platform launched in South Africa in 2016. Since then, Netflix says more than 300 South African titles have become available on the service, with productions filmed across 20 cities in eight provinces. Its partnerships with more than 30 local production companies have also supported more than 8,000 jobs over the past decade.

The anniversary comes as South African productions continue to attract audiences outside the country. One of the latest examples is The Polygamist, the Zulu-language series that has reached the Netflix Top 10 in 62 countries and recorded more than 24 million views in its first weeks, according to Netflix.

Netflix’s new slate includes the second season of Blood Legacy, which launches on 25 September. The Ndlovu family returns with its business, power and survival under threat, while secrets surrounding the origins of its empire create new tensions within the family. The drama stars Xolile Tshabalala, Buyile Mdladla, Mike Ndlangamandla, Thembi Nyandeni, Amanda Seome, Dineo Rasedile, Anthony Oseyemi, Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa, Nandipa Khubone, Pallance Dladla and Thabiso Ramotshela.

How to Ruin Diwali: Meet The Parents follows on 30 October. The latest addition to the How to Ruin franchise centres on Mmabatho Nkomo, who meets her fiancé’s traditional Indian family and accidentally exposes her future father-in-law’s affair. With Diwali approaching, she must try to repair the damage while dealing with a family she has thrown into chaos. Rosemary Zimu-Mnguni, Kyle Clark, Jailoshini Naidoo, Koobeshen Naidoo, Sonia Mbele, Meshack Mavuso and Denise Zimba are among the cast.

Another Disaster Holiday arrives on 11 December. Directed by Rethabile Ramaphakela, the sequel follows Joseph Ngema as he prepares to become a father again at 50 while trying to manage a holiday involving his pregnant partner, his children and his ex-wife. Kay Sibiya joins the returning cast.

Other titles announced include Seriously Single Too, Tuiskoms Season 2, Marked Season 2 and Meet the Khumalos 2. Netflix also confirmed a new South African edition of Love Is Blind, hosted by Dineo and Zothile “Solo Ntsizwa” Langa.

The platform is also using the anniversary to strengthen its relationships with local production companies. Netflix announced a new scripted series with The Bomb Shelter Film Productions and a multi-title partnership with Tshedza Pictures covering four scripted series.

To mark the milestone, Netflix has launched a dedicated collection titled A Decade In Africa: Worth Every Watch. Available across Sub-Saharan Africa from September through December 2026, the collection brings together South African productions, other African favourites and international titles featuring African talent.

Ten years after its South African launch, Netflix’s latest slate shows how much the local offering has expanded, while its new production deals point to continued investment in South African filmmakers, actors and stories.

Netflix has a strong selection of South African stories available for everyone this August. Their collections cover crime, romance, family drama, and reality television. The platform’s catalogue includes established favourites alongside newer productions. This gives viewers several Mzansi titles to choose from.

Umthetho

Umthetho will be released August 14. The eight episode crime drama stars Nqobile Nunu Khumalo, Tony Kgoroge, Sindi Dlathu, Sthembiso SK Khoza and Given Stuurman.

The story is about Mbali, a young public prosecutor whose life changes after she discovers that her brother Moses, who was presumed dead, leads a dangerous prison syndicate. She becomes caught between her responsibility to uphold the law and her need to protect her younger brother.

It is adapted from a Brazilian crime drama Brotherhood. It is recommended for viewers who love crime stories.

Kings of Jo’Burg

Kings of Jo’Burg remains one of Netflix’s notable South African crime dramas. The series follows the Masire family, a powerful Johannesburg crime dynasty dealing with betrayal, violence and a supernatural family curse. Netflix currently lists three seasons. 

The show exposes supernatural elements in a traditional setting. Season three talks about Veronica Masire as she takes responsibility for the family and its legacy.

Blood & Water

Blood & Water is a teen mystery drama set around Puleng Khumalo, a lady investigating the disappearance of her sister. Her search leads her to an elite school where she believes she may have found someone that knows about her family’s past. 

The series talks about relationships and family secrets. Its multiple seasons make it an easy choice for viewers looking for a longer binge rather than a one night watch.

Savage Beauty

Savage Beauty follows Zinhle, a woman seeking revenge against the powerful Bhengu family after suffering the consequences of their beauty company’s practices. The drama uses the family’s wealth, business conflicts and complicated relationships to drive the story. 

The second season raises the stakes as Zinhle goes on the run while Don struggles to maintain control of Bhengu Beauty. The series also tackles issues including colourism, class and exploitation, making it more than a typical family soap.

How to Ruin Christmas

How to Ruin Christmas offers movie lovers something special this August. The three season series follows Tumi, who gets into problems while at family gatherings. 

The story settings include weddings, funerals and major family events. The Twala family witnessed several complicated relationships. Casts include Busi Lurayi, Thando Thabethe and Clementine Mosimane. 

Jiva!

Jiva! is a five episode drama about a talented street dancer from Umlazi, Durban. Her dream is winning a major dance competition. However, her ambitions clash with family responsibilities and expectations. The series brings Durban’s dance culture into the story. The performances feature pantsula and bhenga styles. 

Lobola Man

Lobola Man is a  romantic comedy centred on Ace Ngubeni. He is a professional lobola negotiator who can handle various marriage negotiations. His confidence takes a hit when he is hired to negotiate for a couple while discovering that he has a connection with the bride.

Lawrence Maleka, Kwanele Mthethwa and Sandile Mahlangu lead the film.  It is a good choice for viewers who want a lighter Mzansi film.

Heart of the Hunter

Heart of the Hunter is ideal for action and thrillers. The film follows Zuko Khumalo, a retired assassin who is forced back into action after his friend uncovers a dangerous conspiracy.  Bonko Khoza, Connie Ferguson and Tim Theron star in the film. The story is about government conspiracy and espionage.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

Based on the novel by Holly Jackson, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder follows Pip Fitz-Amobi, played by Emma Myers. The series follows a student who investigates a murder case that was believed to be solved. As she digs further, Pip uncovers shocking revelations. The film explains why truth, justice, and accountability matter.

Forever

Adapted from Judy Blume’s novel and created by Mara Brock Akil, Forever is a  romantic drama that focuses on first love and growth. The cast performances make it one of Netflix’s top teen dramas.

Running Point

Mindy Kaling produced Running Point and stars Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon. She plays the role of a woman placed in charge of her family’s professional basketball team. As Isla tries to prove herself in the industry, she must balance family expectations and business goals. The series is a combination of comedy with sports  and management drama. Viewers will learn about leadership, confidence, and resilience.

The Life List

Directed by Adam Brooks, this film was adapted from the novel by Lori Nelson Spielman, The Life List stars Sofia Carson as Alex, a young woman whose late mother leaves her a huge challenge. To get her inheritance, Alex must complete a list of life goals she wrote when she was young. This  pushes her to confront personal fears and reassess what matters. The film explores grief, self-discovery and how to use second chances.

One of Them Days

Produced by Issa Rae and directed by Lawrence Lamont, One of Them Days stars  Keke Palmer and SZA as best friends whose rent money is stolen forcing them into a chaotic day of survival. What started out as a small problem escalates into a series of complications. The chemistry between the two drives the film. The theme is about survival and understanding who to trust.

The Polygamist

The Polygamist is a drama that examines the consequences of living a double life. The series is about a man whose world begins to crumble as secrets surrounding his relationships come to light. Featuring Gugu Gumede, Luyanda Zwane and Kenneth Nkosi, the story explores deception and trust. As truths emerge, the narrative is filled with suspense.
