SA Stars Danica De La Rey Jones and Masasa Mbangeni Join the Cast of Thriller ‘Sniper: No Nation’
South African actors are increasingly appearing in global productions. The latest example is the casting of Danica De La Rey Jones and Masasa Mbangeni in the action thriller Sniper: No Nation, a new instalment in the long-running franchise.
The film, released on 17 April 2026, follows elite sniper Brandon Beckett, played by Chad Michael Collins. After being disavowed by his government, Beckett goes underground as a mission unravels. A rescue operation becomes central to the plot, with his father, portrayed by Tom Berenger, returning to assist in confronting a mercenary threat.

Jones plays Skylar, while Mbangeni takes on the role of Angel, both appearing as part of the supporting cast within the film’s network of operatives.
Both actresses have established careers, with earlier visibility on the South African soap Scandal!. Mbangeni’s role as Thembeka Shezi became widely recognised during her time on the show, while Jones appeared in a later era of the production.
The end of Scandal! in 2025 marked a shift in the local television landscape. Since then, more actors have moved into shorter, internationally distributed projects. Roles in films such as Sniper: No Nation reflect that transition.

For Jones, the role aligns with her recent work in action-focused productions, including Unseen. Mbangeni, known for character-driven performances, has also appeared in film projects such as Heart of the Hunter, and this role adds to her work in the action genre.
The wider cast includes Ryan Robbins, Josh Brener and Jason K. Ralph, alongside South African actor Sizo Mahlangu.
The casting reflects a broader trend of South African actors appearing more frequently in international productions, particularly across streaming platforms.
Sniper: No Nation follows the established format of military action films, while its casting highlights ongoing changes in how international projects source talent.

‘By Any Means’ Review: A Tense Crime Thriller Built on a True Story
By Any Means takes a dark chapter of American history and makes it into a crime thriller. Set against the violence and racial tensions of 1966 Mississippi, the film follows an FBI investigation into the murders of civil rights leaders. It does not present Mississippi as just a backdrop. It makes the setting part of the story.
Plot
The story is about a young Black FBI agent sent to Mississippi to investigate a series of murders connected to the civil rights movement. When he arrived, he landed in an uncomfortable position. He represents an institution that many Black communities have little reason to trust. He has to work in an environment that is unfamiliar.
By Any Means builds tension around the obstacles facing the investigators. Information is difficult to obtain, loyalties are uncertain and the threat of violence is real.

A Thriller With Something to Say
What makes By Any Means good is the way its social themes are built into the thriller. The film explores racism, institutional distrust and the struggle for justice, but these ideas influence the characters and the investigation.
The main character has to navigate several conflicting identities. His position as a Black agent allows him to connect to the people affected by the violence.
That tension gives the film much of its emotional weight. It also prevents the protagonist from becoming a standard crime thriller hero who simply arrives, solves the case and leaves.

Mark Wahlberg plays Gregory Scarpa, the Mafia hitman who becomes an unlikely ally. He underwent a major physical transformation for the role.
Giancarlo Esposito plays civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer, while Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, LisaGay Hamilton, LaChanze, Ethan Embry and David Strathairn appear in important roles.

Production and Visual Style
The production uses the period setting to create an uneasy atmosphere. The locations, costumes and cinematography help establish a Mississippi where danger feels close even when nothing violent is happening.

This is not a movie for viewers looking for a fast, action-packed mystery. It is for audiences interested in crime dramas that combine suspense with a difficult chapter of American history.
