Qhawekazi Mazaleni crowned Miss South Africa 2025
Qhawekazi Mazaleni was crowned Miss South Africa 2025 on October 25, marking the start of a new chapter in her life. The 24-year-old from Gonubie in the Eastern Cape accepted the crown with measured grace and a clear sense of purpose. For her, this victory is not just about the title; it is a chance to continue the work she has already begun, helping children learn and communicate in their own languages.

Mazaleni holds a degree in Speech, Language and Hearing Therapy from Stellenbosch University and is currently pursuing a Master’s at the University of Pretoria, focusing on autism and inclusive education. She has said that she hopes to use her reign to strengthen her efforts in helping children develop literacy and communication skills in their home languages.

Her involvement in inclusive education began before she entered the pageant. She wrote a children’s book in isiXhosa that teaches reading and counting, and she intends to translate it into more of South Africa’s official languages. In an interview with News24, she explained that language remains one of the biggest barriers to learning in South Africa. When children cannot learn in the language they understand best, she said, they are often left behind.

The finale itself was a dazzling production filled with music, lights, and suspense. Among the ten finalists, Mazaleni’s calm and steady presence stood out. When asked about the kind of leadership the country needs, she answered, “We need leaders who listen before they lead.” The audience responded warmly. Moments later, her name was announced as Miss South Africa 2025, with Luyanda Zuma and Karabo Mareka named first and second runners-up.

According to the Miss South Africa Organisation, the title comes with a R1 million cash prize, a luxury apartment for the duration of her reign, and several brand sponsorships. Despite the glamour attached to the crown, Mazaleni has kept her focus on education. She said she plans to expand her literacy and speech initiative by working with teachers, language experts, and community centres to make learning materials more accessible for early learners.
Education specialists say her interest in literacy and language development tackles one of South Africa’s most persistent challenges. National assessments show that many pupils still struggle to read for meaning by Grade 4. Mazaleni aims to respond through awareness, advocacy, and collaboration. Those who have worked with her describe her as focused and consistent; qualities that may help her sustain her plans beyond her reign.

Over the years, the Miss South Africa platform has evolved to value purpose as much as presence, and Mazaleni’s win reflects that shift. Her advocacy draws directly from her professional experience and her belief in giving every child the tools to learn and express themselves. “This crown isn’t an ending,” she said during her final walk. “It’s the beginning of the work.”
If she achieves what she envisions, with more children reading confidently and families receiving support in their home languages, Qhawekazi Mazaleni’s year as Miss South Africa could leave a meaningful impact that extends well beyond the pageant stage.
