Actress Gugu Gumede has opened up about the impact her weight loss journey has had on her acting career, revealing that the changes have gone far beyond her physical appearance.

The former Uzalo star recently reflected on how losing weight has affected the kinds of characters she is now considered for. According to Gumede, one of the biggest shifts has been finally being able to play roles that match her actual age.

For years, audiences associated the actress with older characters, particularly her well-known role as Prophetess MaMlambo on Uzalo.

Gumede revealed that she was only 24 years old when she landed the role that would become the defining part of her career. Despite her age, the role required her to portray a much older character.

That pattern began to change after she underwent gastric sleeve surgery in early 2024, a decision she has previously described as life-changing. Since losing weight, the actress says she has started receiving opportunities to portray characters who are closer to her age, resulting in different acting opportunities.

She also shared that she now feels more capable of meeting the physical demands of certain roles and productions. She said the weight loss has made it easier to meet the physical demands of certain roles.

Gumede also revealed that she has secured what she considers one of the biggest roles of her career. She is set to appear in Netflix’s upcoming drama series The Polygamist, where she will take on the role of Joyce Gomora.
