The success of Uzalo brought both fame and a challenge. Gumede has explained in interviews that Malambo’s popularity boxed her into a particular type of casting. Because she played matriarchal roles so well, producers didn’t deem it necessary to cast her in other roles. In later interviews, she said that although the role was the biggest break of her career, it led to her being repeatedly cast in older and matriarchal roles. Later she began widening her television portfolio with projects such as eHostela, Isiphetho: Destiny, and later Netflix productions.

The role changed her career,  after years of being associated with MaMlambo.  In January 2024, Gumede underwent gastric sleeve surgery, and lost more than 50kg. She explained the decision was about health and to change the kinds of acting roles she began receiving. Gumede has also built a personal brand through public appearances and social media.

Exactly a month ago, my life became the greatest testimony. My daughter, may the heavens pave a way for your greatness, and may they always go to war on your behalf. You are so dearly loved,” she wrote.
